It’s a Big New World … of Food!
Jan 2010 15

As if the holiday months weren’t already filled with scores of tempting culinary indulgences, for the past several weeks some of the videobred crew has been out shooting (and sampling) some of the finest the Louisville food world has to offer. And as it turns out, it’s one very big world! Renowned local chef John Varanese led this epicurean exploration for a new television show, “Big World of Food.”

Viewers take in the first episode ... then reach for a menu

Over 150 people were on hand to celebrate the show’s premiere last Sunday at Varanese, John’s acclaimed Frankfort Ave. restaurant. More than just a cooking show, “Big World of Food” takes viewers from farm to table, showing where the area’s finest and freshest food comes from (hint: it’s not a supermarket). The first episode takes John to Foxhollow Farm in Crestwood, Kentucky, where he learns all about biodynamic farming and its emphasis on organic and sustainable farming techniques. John also pays visits to Creation Gardens, where viewers get helpful tips on how to choose the best produce, and the Dine Company, where he demonstrates some of the newest cooking gadgets. As if this weren’t enough to get your mouth watering, each episode features a savory new recipe from John and an exceptional cocktail to go with it. On this week’s menu? A candied pecan salad with fresh, organic greens from Foxhollow Farm and a Pear Essence Cosmo from Varanese’s expert bartender.

For the videobred crew, “Big World of Food” was an exciting opportunity to shoot an entire TV show in HD, as well as the chance to flex their creative muscles with some playful videography and inventive graphics. The core crew consisted of Raph Cecil, director; Brian Cunningham, director of photography; and Matt Niehoff, editor, audio, graphics and post-everything. Among their favorite gourmet samplings during the shooting: the exceptionally delectable sauteed beef tips and tortellini on the menu at Varanese, with local grass-fed beef, of course.

No doubt the crew and viewers alike will discover even more gastronomical pleasures during the 13 episodes of “Big World of Food.” The organic coffee and tea episode, chronicling everything from the art of roasting to the healing effects of exotic teas from around the world, will air on the CW Louisville this Sunday, January 17 at 5:30p.m. You’re sure to want dinner reservations afterward!
