Videobred has had some pretty fantastic people work under this roof. Frankly, why shouldn’t we brag about it? Every month we are going to feature one of our alums and find out, through a series of 9 (ish) questions, what they have done since their days at Videobred.

This month we had the pleasure of talking with Wayne Shepherd. Even more fortunate is that Wayne is in town for a brief stint. Although Wayne has an office at Videobred, his home base is in Redondo Beach, CA. There he runs At The Post Productions and has done quite well for himself. Wayne has an impressive resume, working on movies like 300, Pleasantville and The Tourist, to name a few. It is always a pleasure to have him around. Below is a photo of Wayne and Dave Krieghauser, from back in the day.

When did you work at Videobred and what did you do here?

May 1985 – Summer 1991. I performed every job at one time or another while at Videobred but I started out making dubs then progressed to a production assistant in the field but ended up as an editor.

What is your job now, and what do you love about it?

I’m the Visual Effects Supervisor for my company At The Post. Even after 25 years I still love what I do, the technical and creative challenges are different of most every project and that keeps the mind fresh.

What is the most important thing you learned while work at Videobred?

This is a tough question, I value so much of my experience at Videobred and tell people constantly. One of biggest things to for me has been how to run a creative business, a company made up of artist. I’ve seen many companies try to force a corporate structure on an industry that in my opinion needs to breathe on it’s own and have room for people to grow. Dave, Bob and Dennis, with their guidance, let us all find our own way. Beyond that, the technical skills of filmmaking have been invaluable to my career.

What is your drink of choice now and what was it then?

Today: Bombay Sapphire and tonic with a lemon. Then: I believe it was Tanqueray & tonic.

What movies have you seen lately?

21 Jump Street, Project X, Safe House and Wanderlust.

Your favorite piece of technology?

AutoDesk Flame, Visual Effects Compositing System.

What is your biggest Louisville guilty pleasure?

It use to be White Castle since I’ve lived west of the Mississippi for 18 years but if I think about what I really miss the most it would have to be the people.

Craziest thing that happened on a shoot or in an edit?

It was the time kkjhoiwennnosi sdfwoinmms, slkdjfoiiier loeik;m,mzj!!!!!! Wow, that was crazy. (censored)

Advice to incoming interns or anyone who wants to work at Videobred?

My advice is to work hard, absorb every bit of information in as many areas of the business as possible and take advantage of each opportunity that crosses your path. An advantage I realized later was my wide range of experience at Videobred became extremely valuable, today people tend to be more specialized, an editor just edits, a 3D animator just animates, etc. If you’re trying to light a visual effects scene in the computer, the practical lighting experience on-set becomes a valuable asset and that carries over to many other positions.

Great advise, thank you. To find out more or contact Wayne check out these links.

They say that the only constant, is change. Sometimes it’s for the good, other times it’s for the great. And with our newest editor/shooter, I believe Videobred has once again upped the ante.

Eric Stemen comes to us from a land down under. Well, he was born there anyway. A son of an Army officer, Eric has spent time in Australia, Portugal, Ohio, Mississippi, and Alabama. After relocating for the last time to Kentucky, Eric began getting his feet wet shooting wedding videos with Jamie’s (Pence) father in Elizabethtown. “He was definitely a mentor to me. I watched him and learned a lot, and knew that’s what I wanted to do.” With a deep interest for cars however, he originally received a degree in Automotive Technology. After working as a mechanic for a year but still taking classes in television production, he realized that he could marry his love of cars and love of shooting and editing together.

Eric went on to Western Kentucky University where he received his degree in Television Production. After graduating in 2009, he interned on Ft Knox shooting video for their ROTC program. It was there that he was able to put Final Cut to good use and really start to get deep into editing. Eric joined Kertis Creative shortly after where he headed projects for Desert Sun Auto Group and Mavia. You can check out some of his animation work here: http://mavizon.com/ or his documentary for Desert Sun here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmgAtBUmbyA

After 2 years with Kertis, he was approached by Jamie to join our team. Eric had met Jamie and was eager to get behind Jamie’s belief and vision in the video industry. He was excited about the opportunity to stretch his creative legs.

In his spare time, Eric puts his love of shooting and editing together creating videos for Auto and BMX crosses. He is also mountain bike enthusiast so chances are good you can catch him in his favorite spot, Cherokee Park. What you won’t catch him doing however is rooting for UK or UL basketball. Because, and I’m not kidding, he doesn’t watch sports. Sigh.

That’s okay, Eric. We’re still thrilled to have you here. Welcome!!

-Rebecca

Members of the the Videobred Bowling and Cholesterol Awareness Team joined Big Brothers and Big Sisters at the Sports and Social Club to Bowl for Kids Sake–and pizza and beer, but mostly for the kids. The pins hardly stood a chance as team VB raised more than $500 competing against a conclave of Greater Louisville’s advertising elite. Team individual honors for most ducks tagged goes to motion graphics editor Tobias (Toby) Van Kleeck who nearly bagged the coveted turkey in the final frame. Toby proved once again that in any sport that encourages beer and fast food consumption while participating, post-production rules.

With every New Year, there is undoubtedly a sense of reflection for the past year, along with hope and motivation for the coming year. Videobred had a fantastic and eventful 2011. It has been a busy year, running the gambit of projects and clients. We have brought on new team members, and we have had to say goodbye to old friends. We have succeeded as a team and as individuals. There are too many cool projects and events to chose from, so here is just a smattering of pictures that tell our story. Thank you to our friends, families, clients and everyone in between, for your support. The Videobred motto is “Work hard, play hard.” Cheers to keeping that spirit alive in 2012. Happy New Year!

Yesterday was Videobred’s Annual Thanksgiving Potluck feast. As Thanksgiving rapidly approaches, and creating Pilgrim costumes out of construction paper has taken the place of competitive pumpkin carving parties, I find myself wondering, where in the heck has the time gone?! How could the Holidays possibly be here already? The answer is simply this: Time flies when you’re having fun (and working your tail off)!

The old cliches ring very true this Thanksgiving’s Eve. October and November were very busy and productive months for the entire VB team. With shoot and edit help from Will, Ben Bishop, Steve, and Matt, Producer Raph Cecil successfully completed projects for UL Hospital, Hanover College, OFS Brands, and Papa Johns. Annie Ratterman finished projects for the talented Kay Milam, Huamana, and Sam Dodson for LG&E. In addition, Alan Manias included GE and School Choice into VB’s growing portfolio.

Now we can celebrate – a moment where we can sit back, enjoy each other’s company, and most importantly give thanks for all our wonderful clients and great times spent together over the years. As Videobred’s Receptionist, I am personally thankful to have job where I can be around creative and talented geniuses who know how make brilliant pieces to hit the airways, and who also give me something to look forward to everyday. Like possibly getting back my scissors.

Lastly, in case you didn’t catch it on our Facebook page, here is a link to our Thanksgiving video. Happy Turkey Day everyone!

Horror is the most subjective of film genres because quite simply, not everyone is scared of the same things. I could be utterly terrified of ghosts and demons so Poltergeist and Parnormal Activity keep me tossing in bed at night. But you may be more afraid of the tangible presence offered in slasher films such as Halloween or Scream. Whatever your poison, there’s almost certainly a horror film that’s been made guaranteed to make you check around the corner or leave the light on at night. So we’ll begin in atypical fashion by listing the 10 scariest classic horror films sure to haunt your dreams come October 31st…

10. A Nightmare on Elm Street

Freddy Krueger is an all time horror icon that was truly intimidating and scary in this original from Wes Craven.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqZCh3fOUPg

9. The Fly

David Cronenberg’s remake is a shining example of what terrible things demented, creative individuals can do with a single idea.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BzwxJ-M_M0&feature=related

8. Night of the Living Dead

The Godfather of zombie movies is potently scary and high on intentional, and accidental, social commentary.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pElSu_ECJGM

7. The Shining

Adapted from a story by Stephen King, Stanley Kubrick again showcases his cinematic talents and breaks us down one repeated sentence at a time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Cb3ik6zP2I

6. Jaws

    Daaaa-Dum…Daaaa-Dum…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucMLFO6TsFM

5. The Thing

Another remake, The Thing turns the viewer, and even its own characters, on their heads with special effects and gore.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouZkkIsLiNg

4. Alien

In space, no one can still hear you scream…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEVY_lonKf4

3. Halloween

The best contribution William Shatner ever made to cinema, sorry Star Trek fans.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljchb1tsLfs

2. The Exorcist

A still terrifying trip into the world of religious terror that particularly strikes a chord with America’s deep rooted Christian contingent.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDGw1MTEe9k

1. Psycho

The birthplace of modern horror is still a masterwork of filmmaking and suspense.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG3-GlvKPcg

Though as much as I love the classics like Halloween, The Exorcist, Psycho, and Jaws, I always get a fascinating thrill from lesser known, and less seen films. Which isn’t to say bad, simply undiscovered by most of society for one reason or another. Oftentimes because the films are independent, lower on budget, or less accesible in the mainstream. Though if you know what you’re getting into, most of these films can send you quivering into the fetal position. So here are 10 independent horror films sure to spice up your Halloween…

10. Tucker & Dale vs Evil

Two lovable hillbillies are embroiled in a case of mistaken identity in this horror comedy that will gross out as well as touch you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQOZHEYhVtU

9. Dance of the Dead

Part of the Zom-com movement that gained steam with Shaun of the Dead, Dance is a quickly paced, action packed, gore fest.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a85UQt8aG5E

8. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

Fans of TV’s The Office and Parks & Rec are sure to get a kick out of this Mockumentary on a modern day serial killer and the techniques he employs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t432rePirH8

7. Session 9

A gritty, dirty, creep filled film about asbestos cleaners in an abandoned asylum and their slow descent into madness.

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsxkRNvEbhM

6. House of the Devil

The definition of “slow burn”, House could turn some off but also contains a unique atmosphere and relentless tension building tough enough to grate your teeth.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SOur3WwZvM

5. Frozen

Horror hero Adam Green’s terrifying look at how being stuck on a ski-lift, 40+ feet in the air, during a snow storm, can alter a person’s behavior.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiUNsDVjCbo

4. Rogue

This spiritual crocodile cousin of Jaws is filled with actor’s you’ll recognize and terror you’re familiar with. Jaws+Rogue=NEVER get in the water.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ur7CpX16xXE

3. Splinter

Splinter is to The Thing and 80s creature features what Scream was to Halloween and other slasher films except replacing the wit and comedy with incredible practical effects and terrific scares.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAPErVZ-5e0

2. The Poughkeepsie Tapes

First of all, good luck finding this one. But if you can it will break you to pieces. A Mockumentary/Cinema Verite that when watched with an open mind will keep you on edge consistently and even past the film’s conclusion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdjFcoe2950

1. Trick ‘R Treat

The perfect antidote to a Halloween horror craving. This semi-anthology has comedy, monsters, effects and mood that perfectly resemble the holiday.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUqsXvBAqRY

I love to read, don’t you? So many wonderful horror films get lost in the shuffle because they’re foreign and contain that most anti-American of devices…subtitles! Though with some of these films I am quite glad to have the distraction of words at times due to the horrific nature of foreign directors. The lasting effects of the constant wars in Europe are still fresh and out there on screen in horror films from countries across the globe. So now, with very explicit warning due to a higher level of insanity and violence at times, are the 10 scariest foreign horror films…

10. Trollhunter

A monster movie with massive scale creatures and insight into Norwegian social constructs. Fun, funny, and awe inspiring at times.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLEo7H9tqSM

9. Black Sheep

Set in New Zealand where Weresheep attack after genetic modification. Yes, Weresheep.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gn-KXNcpyt0&feature=fvst

8. Severance

If you’ve ever been on a work retreat, then fantasized about seeing your coworkers ripped apart but unknown killers while still being devastatingly funny….this ones for you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuz0-iqKf74

7. Cold Prey

A modern slasher with a terrifying antagonist and protagonists who actually react logically to their insane plight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU-IMPPbj-Y

6. Dog Soldiers

Mostly an action film due to its military mission component and automatic weapons. Horror because of the werewolves.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_0Ej5N-hFQ

5. Frontiere(s)

A French gore extravaganza that contains chilling atmosphere and environments as well as well as Saw-topping effects.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_I3zv997qg

Once you see Sackhead from The Orphanage you’ll never look at Little Big Planet the same again.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jA6pPzh6Bd4

3. [REC]

A revelation of a film that was quickly remade into the competent American film Quarantine. [REC] is mostly superior in every way.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeaUokzE9fI

2. The Descent

Neil Marshall’s second appearance on this list is inarguably his most notable. The Descent is a whale of a monster flick that combines claustrophobia and interpersonal conflict to culminate in a bloodbath.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5I1q4KhKNU

1. Let the Right One In

The best vampire film out there, period. Featuring unbelievably powerful characters and a journey through loneliness and solitude like none other. Side note, after this give yourself a little time and then watch the American remake Let Me In which is startling good on its own.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICp4g9p_rgo

So there you have it, 30 horror films to get you through the weekend and on to Monday nights festivities. Many of these films are availble via Netflix Instant and other forms of on demand services to watch in your own home this Halloween. So pop the popcorn, watch a few trailers, pick out a few you like, and get into the Halloween spirit with some terrifying entertainment.

July 15 was a day of confusing emotions. It was a day of joy, excitement, and beauty, but it was also a day of sadness, nostalgia, and loneliness. The premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 gave Potter fans all over the world a sense of closure, but marked the end of an epic era.

In this post, our intern and Harry Potter expert, Rachel, will share her experiences from opening night.

I stared down at the holiest sight I had seen in several months: a ticket to the 12:30 3-D showing of the final Harry Potter movie on opening night. I could not decide if I was overwhelmingly happy or overwhelmingly sad. The conclusion of the Harry Potter phenomenon was only a couple of hours away, and it was sure to be rad, but a huge part of my childhood was going to end along with it. I decided to ignore the negativity and enjoy my night. The sadness could wait. I climbed in the car with a few crucial friends, two hours before show time, and prepared myself for one of the greatest experiences of the summer.

We arrived at the theater, and it was not any surprise that the parking lot was almost completely filled. We managed to find a spot in the very back of the lot and made the trek up to the building. We discovered a line that completely circumnavigated the entire building. About halfway around the line, I spotted none other than Videobred’s own Brian Cunningham, fake wand in hand. After exchanging a few words with Brian, I continued on my way. As my group ventured on to the back of the line, I thought to myself that if Brian were to have a real wand, it would definitely have a core consisting of unicorn hair.

We finally reached the back of the line where my group of friends merged with fellow VB intern Gina Durkan. There was some Red Bull and Death Eater symbols involved, but our time in the line was short-lived because we plotted a way to skip the line and wait inside the theater’s bar. Once we were in, we indulged in their special “Harry Potter drink,” which looked really green and awesome, but tasted disappointingly bland.

The theater was already packed by the time we got there, but managed to find seats in the second row. Disclaimer: After a couple of “Harry Potter drinks,” 3-D film looks about ten times more awesome, so I recommend that to everyone.

As for the movie itself, it was action-packed from the first minute, but if you haven’t read the book or seen the other movies, then you will be completely and utterly lost. However, since I know the book by heart I was able to know exactly what was happening when it was happening, what parts they changed, and what parts they left out completely. I won’t give away too many of the details, but the movie is definitely worth the time and money, especially if you see it in 3-D. It’s not exactly cinematic gold, but I’d definitely classify it as cinematic silver.

As Ron Burgundy, KVWN-TV Channel 4 Evening News Anchor, once exclaimed “Hey everyone come and see how good I look!” and so too should Videobred’s talented and good-looking staff shout it to the mountaintops.Creating an environment for our awesome summer interns to learn practical skills is important, and if that means impromptu photo shoots in our fully capable studio then so be it.Working with many different lighting styles throughout the day and assisted by Will Cravens , Gina and Barrett took full advantage of different staff members’ good looking-ness as they passed by. This led of course to some impressive results, as you can see via our Facebook page.

Using the Canon 7D and a lens that can create the softest depth of field you have ever seen, the interns learned about differences in apertures, exposures, shutter speeds, and ISO values. Sure, it was a lot to take in and it is possible that a review will be necessary, but still it was covered. So have a look and be sure to let us know what you think on the Facebook page.

Our interns have already produced an absolute gem of a video! “The Chronicles of Bacon” tells the story of Archie (Steve Hurst’s dog), and his quest for bacon during one of his days at Videobred. As his search unfolds, Archie discovers some unflattering secrets about some members of the Videobred team. These secrets are dark and dirty (and completely false in real life). Will Archie be able to locate a piece of delicious bacon, or will his efforts become moot due to the embarrassing factoids he encounters on his journey?

Interns Rachel Shulhafer, Gina Durkan and Barrett Dennison produced, shot, and edited their short video in less than a week. With each having a different strongpoint, they were able to learn from one another and gain experience in their areas of interest.

Rachel came up with the idea based around Archie while dozing on and off during the NBA Finals. “I fell asleep, dreamt about bacon, and that’s how it came to be,“ she said. “It was an ‘ah hah!’ moment.”

Barrett was behind the AF100 camera and was also the voiceover as Archie. He feels like this first project was a large step in the right direction for him and his partners.

“Once upon a time, I was a lone wolf in search of an opportunity to learn,” Barrett said. “I came to videobred an infant with a mere glimpse of what production offered me. As my fellow interns and I conspired to create our first commissioned work, I found my pack, each person with their own set of skills, personality, and courage and we pursued what I think was a great learning experience.”

The last step in their adventure was the editing and final touches. Gina had experience in post production so she put her skills to work.

“It was cool that everyone at Videobred was constantly supporting us and willing to do whatever we said to help with the project,” she said. “’Twas like having infinite power.”

With the help of the VB team and the amazing Archie, our interns successfully passed their first project.

“The three of us are very efficient and we are going to make even better projects because now we know what’s up,” Rachel believes.

Looks like we will be putting them to the test. Stay tuned for more great work from the wolf pack!

We received some great entries in our Brutally Epic UK/UofL Football Tickets Challenge, but in the end the ‘bred mostly bleeds blue, which means we swooned when we saw the tribute video made by Charlotte Reed, of red7e, and Lottie Stockwell of Power Creative. These wild cats fans even wrote a little story about some of their recent escapades, including an appearance by our very own Raph Cecil.

In a very close second place, Matt Krupp had us all laughing with his truly Brutally Epic tale of UofL football tailgating and a legendary keg stand. Matt gets two tickets to his pick of any UofL game this season, while the Cats girls will be cheering on their team this Saturday. Everyone is welcome to join the videobred crew for tailgating on Saturday. It promises to be epic.

Congrats to all the winners! Here’s a story from those girls in blue before you watch their video on the facebook page here.

Once upon a College Gameday in the Commonwealth, some crazy Cats fans ventured from Possibility City to Rupp, ran into a hunky camera man named Raph, and asked “What would John Wall do?!?!” Their fairy fan-mother, Vic, appeared who was college buds with Chuck Hayes and happened to be in town on this NBA All-Star weekend. Fan-mother was dressed to impress and convinced Chuck to get VIP passes for her fanatical fans where they rubbed elbows with former Wildcat hoops royalty. And then at the stroke of midnight, footballers Turtle and Randall Cobb appeared (despite surely being carded at the door). Photo ops, fist pumps and vodka-crans (courtesy of VIP) ensued. They all lived happily ever after, laughing hysterically and questionable “professional” ladies attempting the splits on the dance floor.
